System prompt

The underlying, invisible instruction that defines an AI's role, tone and boundaries before you ever ask it your first question.

What it means in practice

A system prompt is the employment contract and the handbook for a new employee. An ordinary prompt is the specific task of the day (β€œwrite an email”); the system prompt is the role. It reads something like: β€œYou are a professional assistant at a law firm. Answer concisely, use formal language, and if you do not know something about the law with certainty, do not answer, ask for a lawyer to be consulted.”

Why companies need to know this

An example from practice

An estate agency was drowning in client enquiries it could not process. They deployed AI to automate lead generation. The key to it working was an airtight system prompt: β€œYou are a real estate assistant. Your only job is to establish the budget and the location sought. If the client asks for a discount, politely reply that pricing is handled by the agent directly. Never promise a discount and never arrange a viewing.” That removed any risk of the chatbot promising the customer something impossible.

In our company AI workshops we teach your team to build prompts that make AI work like an experienced colleague rather than a temp.
